Bible Study Fall 2018

This fall we are reading Crossing the Waters: Following Jesus through the Storms, the Fish, the Doubt and the Seas by Leslie Leyland Fields, as well as watching her corresponding videos during each of our meetings.

“Get ready for the wettest, stormiest, wildest trip through the Gospels you’ve ever taken! The Gospels are dramatic and incredibly wet, set in a rich maritime culture on the shores of the Sea of Galilee. Yet we’ve missed much of this perspective—until now. In this 6-part series, Leslie Leyland Fields, author, speaker, and seasoned Alaskan fisherwoman, takes us on a journey through the life of Christ. She leads us across the waters of time and culture out onto the Sea of Galilee, through a rugged season of commercial fishing with her family in Alaska, and through the waters of the New Testament beside the ragtag fishermen disciples. Her own story and her fresh insights will challenge our understanding of Jesus and what it means to “Come, follow me.

Social Events
We plan a variety of events throughout each semester to provide opportunities to get to know each other better. We meet once a month for week-day playdates, rotating at different SBS members homes. Family gatherings are also something we plan a few times a semester, meeting at parks, apple farms or people’s homes for potlucks. In previous years we have scheduled a couples night out in December, it’s a fun time to get out with our husbands.

Service Projects
Another main focus of Side By Side Madison is to work together to serve others in our community. Our most consistent project is to provide meals once a month for the families staying at the Ronald McDonald House. We provide dinner for 20-25 people. Meals can either be made at the Ronald McDonald House or prepared ahead of time and dropped off at 5:00pm. At that time we have a few Side by Side members there to help set up the meal and make sure food is warm and ready to go. The Ronald McDonald House staff cleans up the meal once the guests are finished with the meal. Children are welcome to come and help set up the meal. We have also provided refugee supplies for Voice of the Martyrs, and provided food for local food pantries. This December we plan to have a book drive for the children’s hospital waiting rooms. We welcome other ideas on additional service projects.
